Christian Metz Model

Christian Metz created the model of genre development for film in his book "Language and Cinema" (1974). He states that genres go through four stages of existence. These are as follows.

Experimental:
The stage at which the genre is explored and experimented with. For example, Nosferatu was an experimental horror film.

Classics:
These films include established and already known characters and ideoligies. They established the narrative conventions of the genre in it's most successful and defining period, for example Frankenstein and Dracula.

Parody:
This is the stage of the genre throughout which, the genre is mocked for comical value. Fun is poked at the genre and such films are not supposed to be taken seriously. An example of such a movie(s) would be the Scary Movie series.

Deconstruction:
This is where films take specific sub genres and develop them together, such as Se7en which has elements of both Thriller and Horror.
