I watched a variety of thriller movies including Seven, The Bourne Supremacy, Revolver and Obsessed and found that more than often there is a killer or a character who is present to cause some sort of violence. For example, in Se7en, there is a killer who is punishing those who commit the 7 deadly sins however the killer's identity remains hidden which helps create the psycholigical aspect of such movies.
